200 People Benefit from the Rural Development Project Implemented by Citibank and Mihai Eminescu Trust

200 People Benefit from the Rural Development Project Implemented by Citibank and Mihai Eminescu Trust During the last two years, Citibank Romania in partnership with Mihai Eminescu Trust tackled the environmental challenges and poverty through the development of small-scale, sustainable businesses in low-income rural communities in Transylvania.

Financed by Citi Foundation with a USD 100,000 grant, the project “Supporting Rural Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Livelihoods in Transylvania” was finalized with outstanding success and significant improvements in the lives of more than 200 locals are already visible.

One of the main activities of the project was to help a small company from Medias area to put together a small facility to produce fuel pallets form wood debris. The production line is ready to operate and will have its official inauguration soon. This type of fuel is readily available, low priced, safe, easy to use, and very environmentally friendly.

Also, small grants and professional training sessions were offered to village craftsmen, while supporting the development and selling of sustainable craft products based on the area’s nature, history, and culture.

“In 2010 I started working with Mihai Eminescu Trust. First, it was only for small pieces of furniture but finally we ended talking about the production of fuel palettes. Step by step, we have outlined the concept, we made a list of the required equipment and now my family and I are ready to run this business.
I come from a family of carpenters, my father worked with wood all his life, the same did my brothers and we intend to keep and preserve our lifestyle”, Emil Ganea, carpenter from Moşna, Sibiu County, and beneficiary of the project, said.

For developing the rural area of Sibiu county, the project supported during 2009 and 2010 the local production of traditional bricks and tiles, using only local raw materials, same as hundreds of years ago, in traditional kiln.

Theoretical and practical trainings in traditional carpentry, interior stairs, reconstruction, conservation and agro tourism were held in several villages in the area, with the contribution of foreign experts and architects. During the last two years, 45 locals from 7 villages ware trained in agro tourism and based on the officially-approved course, the participants will to become self-employed and operate traditional rural guesthouses.

“At Citibank, we are committed to the economic empowerment of individuals, families, and communities in the areas where we work so that they can improve their standard of living. We believe this partnership managed to put the basis of an economically vibrant rural community, through building assets, skills, and hope for a better future”, Cristina Stăiculescu, Public Affairs Manager at Citibank Romania, declared.

“In the future, the small craftsmen will continue to be supported by Mihai Eminescu Trust so they can further develop their businesses, to acquire more customers and to promote a healthy lifestyle in the communities they live in” , Caroline Fernolend, Vice-president of Mihai Eminescu Trust, declared.

Mihai Eminescu Trust concentrates on the Saxon villages of Transylvania, because of the age and richness of their culture and the emergency caused by the mass emigration of the Saxon inhabitants to Germany in 1990. These villages – farmers’ houses and barns built around fortified churches, substantially unchanged since the Middle Ages lie in spectacularly beautiful surroundings. Every action Mihai Eminescu Trust takes is to minimize the new threats from agricultural collapse to the abandonment of houses and a lack of awareness of the value of this endangered heritage.
